The SSYAJR Hot Air Balloon

The SSYAJR Hot Air Balloon

SSYAJR

We built a hot air balloon using 4 pieces of string and a small garbage bag.

Materials

  • Small garbage bag
  • string
  • Hole Puncher
  • Hairdryer
  • Scissors

Hypothesis

We predicted that our hot air balloon would fly since the hot air would get captured into the garbage bag, leading it to lift up because of the warm air.

Procedure

  1. We collected our materials and made a plan.
  2. We took our hole puncher, trying to make a hole. However, it didn’t work out as planned so we changed our plan and made a hole with scissors.
  3. We cut our string evenly and did a triple knot onto the bag, ensuring that the strings wouldn’t undo.
  4. Mr.Ray plugged in the hair dryer so that we could proceed with the experiment.
  5. We turned on the hair dryer and held a string in each hand, ready to do the experiment.
  6. Mr.Ray put the hair dryer under the balloon for 1 minute to warm it up and then let it go and didn’t turn it off.
  7. It stayed in the air for about a second and then fell down.

Take Two

Hypothesis

If we use a bigger garbage bag with a smaller hole, then more air will get trapped into it because the air will stay in the balloon for a longer period of time and come back to the ground at a slower pace.

Procedure

  1. We made a new plan to ensure that the hot air balloon would stay up for longer.
  2. We used the strings that we used the first time so that we wouldn’t waste.
  3. We collected a bigger balloon and then added the strings and made a small hole so that the air would stay in.
  4. Then we took a string and tied it around the hot air balloon. However, it didn’t work, so we put tape around it to keep the

hole small.

  1. Then we went to the gym, ready for our second attempt.

Results

It stayed up for 3 seconds and worked better than it did for the first attempt because of the changes we made. We learned that when there was a smaller hole and had a bigger bag, it worked better.
